Unboxing Department of Brewology in the Snow

Growing up in Arizona, my body knows heat.

Existing in 100+ degree weather was an everyday occurrence. Then, in 2010 my wife and I moved to Los Angeles. Again, a state not known for its cold weather.

Having moved to upstate New York in 2020, we knew the weather would be very different. Fall was beautiful - with more colors in the trees than I have ever seen. But the transition from fall to winter seemed to happen overnight.

The kids love playing in the snow. Yet, until recently - it was so light that it wouldn't linger on the ground overnight. So we were not prepared for what we woke up to recently - a literal wall of snow at our door.

A massive snowstorm hit the northeast and blanketed our area with over three feet of snow. The forecast had projected between 12-18 inches, so this was far greater than anyone expected. (Future Jeff here - that amazement faded fast after spending hours shoveling out our driveway and vehicle. Ok back to the fun part)

The kids were dying to get outside and play, so knowing that I only had a small window of time, I decided to film an unboxing video. Perfect timing then that my first bag of Department of Brewology coffee had arrived only days before.

I would assume that if you follow Americano Mondays, you aware of the Department of Brewology. Founders David Salinas and Brett Cannon have created a well-earned space for themselves in the world of coffee.

David's illustrations and designs grace the walls of coffee shops, home barista stations, and coffee lovers' art collections in general. One of my favorite coffee mugs is their Filter Coffee Not People mug that I purchased at the 2018 SCA Coffee Competition event in Seattle, WA.

But selling coffee - under the brand of Department of Brewology is something new for them. As David told me - with the pandemic hitting us all - it was time to try something new.

They have partnered up with Austin, TX-based Praxis Coffee to help with the roasting. They are also giving two dollars back - for each bag sold to the coffee producer. That's freakin' awesome.

I hold so much respect for David and Brett (whom I've never met - but I assume he's a good dude as well. ha). They have solidified their position in the larger world of coffee by fusing their love of coffee culture with their given craft for not only creating beautiful art - but turning that into a business. I'm all about that life.
